Visit the Archaeological Route of the Rione Terra guided tour

The Rione Terra was the first inhabited nucleus of the city of Pozzuoli.

The fortress is built on a 33-meter-high tuff spur, surrounded on three sides by the sea. Over the centuries it has been the scene of historical and natural events which have brought about important changes also in the morphology of the Phlegraean Fields.

Despite this, it has always remained an inhabited center, keeping memory of the passing of the centuries. A group of exiles from Samos who fled the tyranny of Polycrates probably settled first on the fortress. These founded around 530 BC. Dicerchia, of which the archaeological excavation did not reveal substantial remains.
