Genoa is located on the coast close to the French border and only a few hours travel to major cities and resorts such as Portofino, Cinque Terre, Florence, and Milan making it an excellent travel base.

If you have a car, its only 35 km to Portofino, 100 km to Cinque Terre and 140 km to Milan. If you really wanted to you could cross the French border and visit Nice which is about 200 km away.

The main station Genova Stazione Piazza Pincipe makes train travel easy.
Slow trains are slow in Italy, the fast trains FrecciaBianca, FrecciaRossa or Italo are recommended.
Genoa to Milan is about 1 hr 34 min on the fast train and costs €25*
Genova to Florence is 2 hours 45 min on the fast train and costa €39*
Genoa to Rome is about 4 hours on the fast train and costs €63.50*
