Hotel Review: Star Hotels Excelsior Bologna, Italy

Business and Travel Hotel in Bologna

-While visiting Bologna to compile The Beginners Guide to Bologna  I stayed at the Starhotels Excelsior which is conveniently located across the street from the station and a 15-minute walk to the historical center. I had a very comfortable stay. They let me check-in early and at check-out, I was able to leave my bags in storage and pick them up later in the afternoon. The hotel was clean and the staff was courteous. The restaurant was very good and the room was a comfortable size with a spacious bathroom.

Here’s a quick overview video of less than 2 minutes:  video walk-through of the Starhotels Excelsior.

The Location

Across the street from the main station in Bologna. You literally just have to cross the street. The hotel is within walking distance to the city center and main sights, just a fifteen-minute walk to the Quadrilateral, the historical city center of Bologna.

The Lobby

Open, light and spacious. Comfortable sofas and lounge chair area perfect to use as a meeting point before going out sightseeing or to the hotel conference center. Four elevators going to upper and lower levels. The elevators were spacious enough for three people with suitcases. There are also business conference rooms for large meetings.

The Restaurant

Avorio and Il Fondente Cafe by Eatly are on the ground floor. Avorio is the restaurant and Il Fondente Cafe is the coffee bar by day and the cocktail bar by night. The menu offers fresh pasta and classic Bolognese dishes. After my long day of walking and sightseeing, I had a very satisfying dish of delicious Tortelli in Brodo a typical specialty from Bologna.

On the lower level, there is another Avorio restaurant used as the breakfast room.

The Room

Did it look like the pictures on the hotel website?

Yes, it did. I booked a Superior room for one. The beds were separated and made as single twin beds. For a couple they would be pushed together and made as a Queen bed. The room was clean and tidy. There was a mini bar and kettle for tea and coffee. The beds had extra pillows. The bed was quite comfortable, I had a good night’s sleep. There is plenty of closet space and room to set your suitcase down. The room also had a safe.

The Bathroom

Italian marble titling and countertops. The toilet and tub in near new condition. The shower water pressure and shower temperature were excellent. Travel size toiletries and hairdryer available. Slippers and a plush terry cloth bathrobe can be found in the closet.

The Staff

Check-in time is usually from 3 pm, but I arrived earlier than planned. The room was ready and they let me check-in early.

The staff was polite and cordial. I asked at reception recommendations of what to see, the assistant recited a list of places and circled them on a map. There’s nothing wrong with that, given that he probably has to repeat himself a million times a day, but it is always nice to feel like the assistant is talking to you, not just rehearsing a speech.

I was leaving late in the afternoon, so I left my luggage in the storage room which gave me the freedom to do some last minute sightseeing and shopping.

Overall Summary

A very pleasant stay. Clean rooms and public spaces, comfortable rooms and bed and professional staff.
